CHICAGO (AP) -- Bernie Mac, the actor and comedian who teamed up in the casino heist caper "Ocean's Eleven" and gained a prestigious Peabody Award for his sitcom "The Bernie Mac Show," died Saturday at age 50.

"Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital," his publicist, Danica Smith, said in a statement from Los Angeles.

She said no other details were available and asked that his family's privacy be respected.

The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently was hospitalized and treated for pneumonia, which his publicist said was not related to the disease.

it's always so strange to hear that some celebs died eventhough I don't personally know them. When it comes down to it, they are ordinary people.. it just seems that they are immortal since they are on television and big screens.

May he rest in peace.

I was in disbelief at first...come on, it's like when Elvis died. Bernie Mac is the King of Comedy and when that dies, we're left with crappy sitcoms.

i was shocked the other day too when i heard on the news that he died. i use to stay up till 11 or so just to watch his show.

what the freazzie!!! really??? oh no! when my brother told me, i told him to shut up because he doesn't know what he's talking about...and now i know it's true....
awe...i used to watch some of his shows....very sad news
