World Heritage Luang Prabang Received Golden Award for Top Tourist Destination for Three Straight Years

Luang Prabang, previously the capital of the former Royal Kingdom of Laos and now the jewel of the communist Lao PDR, has been a UNESCO’s World Heritage town since 1975 and named the most popular tourist destination by a British travel magazine for three years in a row.

Situated on a peninsula where the Khaan River runs into the Mekong Prabang Hall and surrounded by mountains, Luang Prabang has its magical power that draws many people around the world to visit and get to know its serene beauty. Luang Prabang is known for its harmonious culture and beautiful traditions, such as the ritual daily round by hundreds of Buddhist monks to receive alms of sticky rice offered by locals who sit and wait along the streets in the early morning hours.

Luang Prabang also has the most preserved mixture of Lao and French colonial architecture-style houses that still stand in good condition, one of the criteria that enables the town to maintain its World Heritage status after a ten-year review by UNESCO.

In a recently interview with VOA by phone from Luang Prabang, Deputy Governor Dr. Khampheng Phengsomphone said that the tourism industry in Luang Prabang has expanded dramatically for the past decade, after Laos opened its door to the world in the 90’s. Last year, over two hundred thousand tourists came to visit Luang Prabang, an increase of about 30% from the year before.

Dr. Khampheng Phengsomphone added that the Luang Prabang Tourism Office is working hard to continue to improve and expand the service sectors to accommodate the increasing number of tourists. But he added that due to budget constraints, Luang Prabang is moving very slowly, and he appealed to foreigners to invest and help develop his town in the areas of infrastructure, hotels and resorts, entertainment industry and others, saying, “Luang Prabang was based on agriculture in the past and now, it depends mainly on the tourism and service sectors. Tourism officials are doing all they can to help improve and provide greater services to tourists. We have brochures in Lao, English and French languages to provide basic information about the town, its people, culture and traditions.

The Wanderlust magazine of England this year again selected Luang Prabang for the third consecutive years for a golden award for being “The most voted popular tourist destination, in a contest of more than 600 cities selected from over 100 countries from around the globe. Dr. Khampheng Phengsomphone was in London to receive the award.

The New York Times newspaper and the Town and Country travel magazine in the United States also name Luang Prabang as one of the top ten must-visit tourist destinations. The beauty of Luang Prabang contains much more than words can describe. One must go and see for oneself.

Thanks for sharing the great info Champ!

I am planning to go and visit Asian Nations {Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and China then to Dominican Republic} soon! I love visiting Laos especially the Northern Provinces (so beautiful). It is awesome to hear that one of the cities that I will be visiting again received "Golden Award"... Muang Luang Prabang, the Royal Capital is extremely magnificent! I recommend anyone to go see it for yourself! No wonder they won the "Golden Award" for three consecutive years!

------------------------<might be off the topic here>--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will keep my fingers cross that when I go back, there will be no Hmong (or Meo as they are still refer by in Asian Nations-Laos, Thailand, China, Vietnam, etc) "rebels"(insurgent) waiting by the roadside trying to bomb vehicles going by, bombing of parked cars, and/or bombing public buildings like several years ago in Viengchang. That was scary! At least Lao Authority were able to evacuated and maintained civil law and order.

I don't blame the Lao Officials for going after the Hmong "REBELS" (insurgent) who are creating or doing harmful thing to innocent people similar to US Government going after the "TERRORISTS" whom are harming innocent people. I hope they offer me monetary rewards to those who capture {dead or alive} those Hmong "rebels" (insurgent) during my visit there just like US Government offering monetary rewards to anyone who capture Saddam or Bin Laden. :p

It has been over 25 years and these rebels or insurgents need to leave the past behind [move forward] and break the old tie with Vang Pao, then you will be at peace (other rebels or insurgents hilltribe groups are at peace with the communist/socialist party...in the past they were fighting them as well). The war is done and the communist/socialist party has the control of the country. Stop trying to start war again...my gosh the country is for once at PEACE!

Those clips that are on youtube might be clips during the war or re-inactment (who know when or where it was taken)and using today robust technology to place them together, thus making everything look so extreme! The interviewees might have been pay :p Of course people will say anything to start a controversial...It seems like and what I heard through the grapevine from other Hmong is that Vang Pao wants to take over Laos and make it "Hmongland" (Pathet Hmong) and he will be the King or Leader of the "Hmongland." Come on guys do you really want to go back to Laos and live there? After you have a nice life in America or in other capitalist countries?

You know how US always involved in other internal affairs like granting Kosovo its independent from Serbia, why don't all the Hmong people gather in one state and protest to break from the Union? hehe :p I mean Texas is already call "Country of Texas" hehe

Anywhoooo...I am going to Asian Nations again and can't wait *woot *woot* Go Luang Prabang*
---*woot*----*woot*-------Hmong must respect or be at peace with the Communist/Socialist Party----woot* woot*----

*woot* *woot* No hating...No hating...*woot* *woot* Communist/Socalist Party is not that bad as you may have think*
