Hmong support bill reintroduction

MANITOWOC – More than 30 local Hmong residents will take a bus to join about 400 other statewide Hmong residents in Madison on Thursday, Jan. 25 to show support for the reintroduction of the Hmong Migration Education Act.
State representatives will hold a press conference for its reintroduction at 11 a.m. in the assembly parlor at the Capitol, according to a news release.
Representatives initially introduced the bill in April 2005, but the legislature did not take the bill up last session, stated the release.
The bill will direct school boards to include the history of the Hmong people in their curriculum, said Kor Xiong, president of Hmong Wisconsin Radio in Appleton.
Instruction will include the role of the Hmong in fighting for the United States in the Vietnam War, the persecution of the Hmong by Laotian government after the war and the reasons for the emigration of many Hmong to the United States, stated the bill.
This bill is important because it will teach other people and the younger Hmong generation about the Hmong and their history, said Nyialong Yang, director of the Hmong Community Center in Manitowoc.
