my bf check how much rice we have left instead of using his hands he feel/step the sack with his feet. I told him that u don't do that to the rice it's disrespectful. So we have a problem arguing with this issue. How he told me that ok so everyone who step in the rice fields is barb (bad luck). He said it's barb to step on the head but he don't think so with rice? I told him to ask his laos friends. He said he's going to ask his philipino friend which he wouldn't think so. I told him he has no manners no one teach him. Maybe cause his mom died like 10yrs ago that's why. My mom always tell me that it's barb u don't do that when she sees me doing it 1 time. What do u think?

I think it depends on how traditional the family is. Like my family would consider it a sin to step on rice because rice is considered to be given us by nature and heaven because of the earth we plant it in and the rain that drops from the sky to help grow them; it's also a gift from the environment that surrounds it .. it's also disrespectful to the people who spend their year harvesting, picking and grinding rice because it's their hardwork into growing it.. even though they sell it, but without them we would have no rice to eat -.- some people don't think of it that way .. so they wouldn't understand

first of all why would he check to see how much by stepping on it? that's jsut weird lol forget the issue of barb you should be focusing on why ur bf checking ti liek that haha but anyway i don't htink it barb well i don't really believe in th concept of barb well i sort of do and sort of don't lol sorry im gtting you people confuse with my typing so like i was saying i don't think its normal to check with ur feet at all and also as to the whole manner thing and about how he didn't learn bc his mom die 10 yrs ago i think that has nothign to do with it at all i mean so waht if hsi mom dies(yes i know its sad not tryign to make it sound trivial) but he can learn manners from other ppl doesn't have to be his parents can be his teacher or another adult

i don't think you should have brought up his mother's death even if you were in a heated argument...

the issue of whether or not it's bad karma and all to step on rice: that depends on your family or you, individually... for me, however, this is the first that i've heard of it being bad karma to step on rice...placing one's foot or feet near someone else's head (especially an elder's) is bad karma, yes, but as for the issue of rice...i'm not sure
