PUBLIC ALLIES - LOS ANGELES is actively seeking:
- passionate young adults (ages 18-30);
- have at least a high school diploma or GED;
- committed to social justice;
- committed to the process of self-growth and personal development;
- Looking to affect change and gain experience in the Los Angeles area.
Public Allies - Los Angeles creates opportunities for diverse young leaders to strengthen their communities through its Community Leadership Fellowship Program which consists of intensive ten-month apprenticeships in community-based organizations, weekly leadership training, community building, and team service.
BENEFITS OF BECOMING AN ALLY
Earn $15,000 (minus taxes) for the ten months. Benefits include a $4725 Educational Award, healthcare, childcare and the development of valuable leadership skills. Although fellows are paid for their service, future allies are asked to commit to the process of developing themselves professionally and personally to better serve their community.
SERVING AT NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS
Our current class of 30 Allies are serving at local community based organizations implementing projects that have a direct impact in L.A. communities. They include: East Los Angeles Community Corporation, Strategic actions for a Just Economy, Children's Hospital, Clinica Msr. Oscar Romero, CADRE, Chinese American Museum, Youth Justice Coalition, Coalition LA, L.A. Shanti, Weingart Center Association, Inner City Law Center, The Los Angeles Commission on Human Relations, Southern California Association for Non-Profit Housing (SCANPH), W.O.R.K.S, Bienestar and Collective SPACE.
ENHANCING YOUR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
Allies receive weekly leadership and professional training on skills and topics ranging from Cross Cultural Communication, Power and Privilege to the History of Los Angeles, Gender Politics and Race, Ethnicity and Culture, Financial Literacy, Budgeting, Resume Writing, and Non Profit Fundraising. Allies also attend customized college courses at Los Angeles Trade Tech College and receive college credits. The trainings and classes are built upon a unique set of principles and practices in community problem-solving, collaborations and self-knowledge. Lastly, each ally is paired with a Public Allies-Los Angeles staff member who serves as their "Coach" over the 10 months. Their role is to provide support to the ally over the 10 months in reaching their personal and professional goals.
Applications are due by Tuesday, May 30th, 2006.
The Fellowship Program runs from August 30th, 2006 to June 30, 2007.
It is strongly encouraged that any potential applicants attend an "infosession". (See below for dates and times.)
