Women of Japan's Floating World" March 10-June 18 2006
www.pacificasiamuseum.org
Please join us and many of the other cultural institutions in
Pasadena as we participate Art Night Pasadena. This year for Art
Night Pacific Asia Museum will present the opening of "Reflections
of Beauty Beautiful Women of Japan's Floating World" which will run
until June18, 2006. The exhibition consists of nearly 75 works
including paintings, woodblock prints, ceramics, textiles and
personal ornaments, mostly from Pacific Asia Museum's extensive but
rarely seen collection of Edo-period art. Reflections of Beauty also
features objects and photos from private collections as well as
paintings by contemporary artists that reflect shifting attitudes
towards beauty, femininity and the roles of women.
The ukiyo or "floating world" of Japan centered on the
Yoshiwara "pleasure quarter" and other unlicensed entertainment
districts that flourished in the city of Edo (now Tokyo) beginning
in the middle of the 17th century. The most common and compelling
images of the floating world, known as ukiyo-e, are the
highly idealized representations of women. Courtesans (oiran) and
entertainers(geisha) were the central figures of the ukiyo who
literally and symbolicallyembodied physical beauty, cultural
refinement and often erotic love.
Reflections of Beauty: Women from Japan 's Floating World is
curated by Kendall H. Brown, Associate Professor of Art History at
California State University Long Beach. This exhibition is supported
by the Consulate General of Japan, Los Angeles and the PacificAsia
Museum's Japanese Arts Council in partnership with the Japan America
Society and Asia Society.
There will be free shuttles transporting visitors to the
participating Art Night venues including : Armory for the Arts,
Norton Simon Museum of Art, Pasadena Museum of California Art and
many others. Admission to all participating institutions is free.
