Joining Subs Tutorial

I've been thinking I might start subbing using this freeware stuff. But, before I do, I was wondering what is the difference between this and hard subbing? Is hard subbing like adding borders to the words? Thanks.

Hardsub means the subtitles are rendered right onto the video, meaning they are part of the video frames themselves. Softsub means the subtitles are stored separately, and whatever video player you are using displays them on top of the video.

This means softsubs can be turned on or off by the person watching the video, but hardsubs can't. On the other hand, hardsubs can be shown in any font the subber wants, can use any color they want, and can use special graphic effects (like flashing each syllable during a song, for example).
