Chapter Four

One of her best friends from Chiangmai, Nadech stood before her. At the sight of her, his face also turned a pale white. It’s been four years since he’s seen that face. The last day was when he watched her from outside the gates of her old house.

“Mint….ahem I mean Khun Chalida can you tell me the events before the crash?” Khun Chalida? She couldn’t help but feel he was trying to distant himself from her. The look in his eyes was of someone she wasn’t familiar with.

“I was about to back out when the car sped behind me before almost crashing. I didn’t see anyone else with him or anywhere else around the parking garage.”

With a simple nod of the head. “That’ll be all.”  he took his leave after that.

Getting into his patrol car he composed himself.

“Nong Mint, I’ve finally found you.”

Since finishing at the police academy,Nadech worked his way up the ranks to become head investigator. He was recently promoted and relocated to Bangkok where he had hope to find Mint again. His first meeting with her wasn’t what he had expected. He expected her to jump into his arms and hold him closely and saying how much she missed him.

The shock expression from her was far from expected. He thought just maybe Boy was right when he mentioned Mint has changed.

“Who’s this new Mint Chalida? What happened to my sweet Nong Mint?”

“That was definitely weird.” Mint spoke to herself as she watched him disappear into his car. “That’s your greeting to me after four years Nadech? Khun Chalida?”

Her heart numbed at the distances in his voice and eyes. She’s lost all her friends since moving to Bangkok.

“Khun Chalida your free to go.” she looked to the smaller framed man as he helped her off the back of the truck and escorted her to her vehicle.

“Thank you.” she politely bowed before getting into her car.

(******************************)

“Does she know that head officer?”

“It doesn’t seem like she does sir.”

“Hm well find out.”

“Yes sir.”

The car pulled out of the garage and headed down the street.

(*****************************)

“Kao let’s have lunch before we shop I’m starving!” he hurriedly agreed with his sister as they strolled through the many shops of the Paragon Mall.

They headed for the nearest restaurant when Mint had spotted the handsome guy from the elevator at her condo. He made eye contact with her and smiled a warm smile.

“P'Mint who are you looking at?” Kao spotted his sister’s change in demeanor and started watching her carefully.

“Someone that lives on the same floor as me.”

“Just someone that lives on the same floor?” the questioning tone he used cause Mint to shoot a look at her brother.

“Huy when did you become Mister Sherlock?” he started laughing but stopped when a figure approach them.

They both looked to the figure and she couldn’t help but let out a smile.

“So we meet again neighbor?” he smiled that infamous smile of his and she felt her knees could buckle at any moment. “I’m Prin, you can call me Mark.”

Mint extended her hand. “I’m Mint and this is my younger brother Kao.”

Kao waied him while keeping his eyes on this Mark. He wasn’t sure how to take in this person. He’s good looking, tall, polite and very slick.

“It’s very nice to meet the both of you.”

The awkwardness was prevalent and Kao had to break his sister from Mark’s grasp.

“P'Mint let’s go I’m starving!” he starting pulling his sister along.

“We’re getting something to eat, would you like to join us?” Mint asked before Kao could pull her completely away.

“I would love too.”

Kao let out an exasperated sigh as he let go of his sister’s hand and trotted to the restaurant and the two followed close behind in their own little conversation. Once seated they ordered their drinks and continued to look through the menu.

“Kao what are you getting?” Mint looked at her brother who’s eyes are always bigger than his stomach.

“I want the pad thai and khao pad too.”

Mint let out a girlish giggle that cause Kao to completely stop his searching and looked at his sister. That giggle she hasn’t used that giggle in four years, why is she busting it out now?

“Go ahead and get whatever you want.” she swooshed her hair back to the side as she looked to Mark.

“So Mark how long have you lived in the condo?” Kao scoffed as his sister continued to bat her eyelashes at him. He was disgusted at any display of affection.

“I travel back between Bangkok and Chiangmai, so I’m not often at the condo.”

With the mention of Chiangmai, both Mint and Kao stopped to look at him.

“Chiangmai?!?”

“Yes, Chiangmai.” he replied laughing. “My father has a company that is based in these two cities. So I help by going back and forth with his deals.”

With the mention of his father’s company it sparked an interest with Mint. She wanted to know his last name but felt rude to ask.

“We used to live in Chiangmai, but we moved to Bangkok four years ago.” Kao started the conversation himself.

“Really? I went to high school in Chiangmai.”

“High school? So that means your how old?…”

“I’m 22.”

“So P'…” Mint shot her brother a bewildered look. Kao doesn’t call just anyone P'.

Mark just looked at Mint and gave her a relaxed expression, it made her calm down. Kao continued his interrogating.

“You said you went to high school in Chiangmai? You must know Boy Pakorn and Margie Rasee?”

Those names struck a chord with Mint as she looked on interested in his reply.

“I do as a matter of fact, Boy is one of my best friends.”

“Really!?” Mint was now enthralled with the fact that he knew some of her best friends.

“P'Mint is good friends with the both of them too. She just hasn’t spoken to them in a while.”

“How are they?” Mint chimed in.

He didn’t know how to reply to that. Boy had stated not to mention anything about Margie. So he went with the safest answer.

“Their doing good, there’s good and bad days.” it was the truth. Boy says Margie has her good and bad days so he wasn’t lying when he mention that.

“That’s good.” Mint couldn’t help but feel guilty that she isn’t as close to Boy and Margie and even Nadech. She wish things were different and they were still close.

Mint remained silent as Kao and Mark continued to talk in their own conversation. They ordered their food and while waiting for it Mark recieved a call on his phone. He looked at the phone and excused himself from the table.

Once he was gone Kao shot a million questions at his sister.

"P'Mint do you know him? How does he know P'Boy and P'Margie?"

"Kao how am I suppose to know him? We left Chiangmai during my high school career, I don't know when he started there."

Few moments after Mint tried to explain Mark made his way back to the table.

"I don't mean to be rude but there has been an emergency at the company, I have to head back to the office." he reached into his back pocket and pulled out some cash. "Here's for lunch."

Mint tried to refuse but he had set it on the table and waved goodbye before making his leave out of the restaurant.

“I’m definitely more interested in knowing how this person, Mark Prin knows them.” her investigator wheels were rolling in her head at full speed. She was going to find out who this person truly was.

Mark was relieved when he was able to leave the table. He didn’t plan on meeting them here and joining them for lunch. He wasn’t prepared for all the questions he received.

“Damn Ai Mark you almost lost it there didn’t you.” he grabbed his phone and made an emergency call to Boy.

“Ai hea Boy why did I ever agree to this?” Boy noticed the stressed out tone in his voice.

“Did something happen?”

“I met Mint and her little brother at the mall and got bombarded by so many questions I couldn’t come up with enough lies to cover them!”

“Ai Mark I know it won’t be easy but someday we’ll let Mint know, but for now please just keep an eye on her. Margie sometimes wakes up in cold sweats screaming Mint’s name. Something bad is going to happen and even if she doesn’t think of us as friends anymore, we are still her friends.”

Mark just agreed and hung up. He looked in the direction that Mint and her brother were sitting and watched as the two siblings laughed and enjoyed their meal together. He wished he had that same relationship with his sister. He’s never talked let alone sit at a lunch table with his sister in over 10 years. She probably doesn’t even know she has an older brother anymore.
