LOL ladyofdarkness.

so raymond obsessed you came to the khmer section to say you don't like the et? ok.... well duh..it's a thai concert why would you expect to see khmers there? just like khmer concerts you wouldn't expect to see thais there.

i don't know what some of you guys are talking about but everyone has their point of weakness and strength. see i think khmer classical dance is nicer than that of thai's. khmer romvong is nicer too and sounds more soothing. thai is better in modern stuff and music but khmer in classical. khmer traditional music is really nice and definitely beats thai for me. i'm glad i'm exposed to many cultures cuz if i didn't know khmer at all it would definitely be a miss! as for chinese and korean, they'e pretty one dimensional. yeah they have some nice modern songs but that's about it you don't see any variety in the style (and i'm not talking about chinese opera or korean's cuz i don't know any young people who like it. i don't). i never get tired of khmer music though. as for chinese series i haven't seen one for a long time. the ones nowadays are not that great either. the 90s had better stuff (american included).

Hi every one so interesting to read every one commends, I agree and disagree with some of you. I don't really watch lots of khmer entertainment but I still give them cridet for trying. I don't like their movie because most of the time I have no idea what it about, the story line doesn't go with the title, the songs has no meaning to it and the actors and actresses can't act. But I don't compare us to any body, why, because all of the educators are taking away and kills during the war we are left with a not very educated one. Khmer needs lots of help, just to watch and listen to their music they used lots of slang in their lyrics. My parents use to tell me if it wasn't the war Cambodia are most fast growing country in Asia....Thai entertainment are better today because they don't have war, and so do others I'm sure in the future Cambodia well grow and improve in the entertainment area....in order for it to happen they needs to get rite of all the corruption first. I don't watch thai lakorn nor chinese series because they doesn't inspire me, but I don't hate them either. I used to love Hindi movie, now I don't like it cause it not as good as when I was young in the 80's and 90's, they used to have a good movies.

"It is because of the WAR" I am bored to hear the same excuse !
I agree the war is responsible of many problems in Cambodia but war is over since a moment now and I don't believe war has something in entertainment lack nowadays. Why do I say that because khmer can sometimes do good and creative thing : but they prefer to rely on easy things. Translating a song is easier than creating a new one for exemple ! The main problem is money : they have to produce a lot to make the more money possible but creating need time and they don't have time if they want money !
As for cinema I can't understand why is it so bad : maybe because they need to take time to look for real actors and better scrip writer lol.

i totally agree with you solin...its time..and time is money..they dont have patience..and neither do i lol...gosh not to put my own culture down..but theres alot of stuff that they need to work on..but im glad that they are still trying..and hopefully in the near future there will be better actors/actresses with skills or better scripts like solin had mention...part of it could be the directors problem hmmm...but then its a little bit of everyones problem..from makeup to hairstylist and to costume designs to their actings' too...gosh my list can go on and on...but again..they are still trying and i give them props for that.

although i havent watch any new khmer movies lately ...last one ive seen was that troung meas one...ive seen how the actors eyes kept wandering around like they cant seem to focus in a certain spot and thats what kills it for me...and lack of emotions. i dont understand why they cant stare straight into the persons' face or eyes and go from there...

gosh and since ive mention this much already..i might as well include the lyric for the songs they choose to go with the movies.....i know that some might have some very good and deep meaning but then there are also some that doesnt make any sense to me at all...and not just for the movie ..it could be just the song itself...

huey..maybe they just need to take some more acting courses thats all...

I learn to speack khmer from watching thai and chinese series dubbed too, As I was growing up my dad don't want me to hang out with too much friends beside @ school my dad would go rent lakorn for us to watch my bro's watch chinese I watch thai hehe... it wierd sometime they watch thai too but not to much I think they like MonrukLukToung with SaranYU/NumPung ( we call sarunyu, Lek) it weird how khmer fans have name for thai star since the first lakorn they see them in ex. KOB suvanant ( PaikPraiek). They also like RachaneeMorlum. my parents were alsway working as I was growing up so no time to teach us khmer we learn from that. JUst like Sajeena I buy all SR karaoke too babd they don't have make anymore
i learned khmer from watching thai lakorns and chinese series too..and was also borned in thailand! i see that most of us are anyways.. ^_^

I totally agree with everyone in their opinions. Khmer entertainment, is changing. for it being better or worse, that's the person's perogative.

personally for me, the script is just plain stupid now, like someone said earlier, they rush the production, so they can come out with another one fast. i like the old movies like sovanpancha, on euy srey on.. even some back from teh 90's with ampor thavy, hok lakkana.. it just seems like back then, the movies have deep meanings. as for now, i guess its trying to play up the storyline to be modern, with issues that today's society is going through.. but i swear, i was watching a khmer ghost movie when all of a sudden, the ghost disappeared, and a bunch of gay men, where doing each others hair, and they were all stuttering. <<which is weird.. needless to say i didn't finish that movie..

i notice some things about khmer drama now, they are starting to do it in episodes, like lakorn. and there is always a cross dresser like lakorn too.. Which is weird when most asian cultures are so biased on homosexuality.

for songs, the oldies are the best!! hands down. I like romvong, saravan, madizon, joul kapueuk(<<shrimp..hahaha) lam leuw. some modern songs are okay, but then again they just sing the same old songs, add their own twist, and hopefully it comes out good, but mostly it comes out shitty... <like Pich Sophea> oh i don't like her, she can't sing, and she not even that pretty.

so wrapping things up, khmer entertainment is slowly, but surely changing. for better of for worse, well that is up to the consumers, if you buy it, and continue buying it, producers are thinking they are doing something right and keep on distributing it.
ive read some very interesting comments on here..

LMAO sueliq ..i know what you mean..i also enjoyed dancing those romvong, saravan, jouk kampeu *gosh its hard to spell it lol...lol the back up dancers ...omg most of them are so lame...wth were they thinking? and what khmer movie is it that have the gay actors in them lol..i would like to know...

I haven't seen Khmer movies before, but I dunno about you guys, but I love Khmer music. Eventhough I dunno what they saying, I love how the language sounds.

And another thing.. I think perhaps some folks enjoy Thai entertainment more is because they have more of it! I'm Lao and I would love to see more Lao Movies, but they barely have any... so I'm left to watch lakorns. lol...

I don't watch khmer movies or their MV much, but I don't compare a strugle to grew country with 85% of the population are living in poverty to a country such as Thai or Korean and such as. Take a good look at Cambodia today how many children beable to attend school like they should, and how many adult live in Cambodia can read or write after the war not very much. We tend to forget what is going back home since most of us either born here or grew up. We get so used to the life here in America and forget about what the people back home has gone through. I don't have to say more because I don't want to creat any issue in this forum, all I want to say is if I can't make thing better I won't say it at all, if I can't help to make it happen than don't say it at all, but I will continue to suport them in the way that I can so they can continue to progress as they move forward for the better. Cambodia are still poor and the system are very corrupted, if the two are not improving nothing well. Forgive me guys but that is how I feel about Khmer entertainment -_-

Yes Cambodia is poor and corrupted today compared to Thailand/Korea/Chinese but It's so far better now than 10/15 years ago and if you compared khmer entertainment todays to khmer entertainment from 10/15 years ago...well there is no improvement but a fall instead.
Don't talk about the post-war period ok !
In music for example, I admit that the music video of before (with the girl dreesed with an evening dress walked at the sea or people dancing in the forest) are quite stupid and bad done with always the same setting but the songs were so far better than now.
I still prefer them to nowadays songs !
Same for the movies : I still enjoy watching the old movies from when I was young while todays movies just suck.
Look at kaew na ma (the girl with a horse head) the old version (I don't know the name of the actors) are 10 time better than the last...and plots and actors from before are better than todays. Even my mother who used to buy a movie each week when I was young stop buying them at all since about 4/5 years because she finds them too bad to be watched !
SO...how can khmer entertainment become worse than entertainment from 10/15 years ago while the country and people do better than before ?

It's good to read what everyone have to say. Everyone has their opinion. Most people in this topic forum are Kmai I assume. Also non-Kmai are welcome like lady0fdarkness, I like how you're open about the topic.

Since many are wondering about kmai entertainment. I do catch up with Kmai entertainment in Srok Kmai.
I just briefly find out what's new so I can keep up with Kmai Entertainment.

I also follow up on Kmai American artists, Kmai European, Kmai Australian who try to step into the entertainment game and represent Kmai. Well there are some who does not accept the Kmai side of them.

I when to LiftOil Concert too, and my little Kmai group were the only Kmai there, but we so represent. Lift expect only Thai there because it's host by Thai Community, but my Kmai group show up and we shout out to the crowd we're Kmai speaking in Thai. No Shame of being Kmai.

I am one of the person who draw into Thai Entertainment, and also keep follow up with Kmai Entertainment.

I mean, it's not that I'm ashamed of my culture, it just doesn't interest me.
I know how you feel. I feel the same way about my culture.

Ahhh.. too many negative things to say about Khmer Entertainment and it sound like I'm hating on my own people.. which I'm not :) On the music side, there has been some improvement, music style wise even though some of them reference neighboring countries music :D
I completely understand you. I do have constructive criticism but not a lot of people understand. and take it offensively.

 I couldn't agree any less. I am tired of hearing the same tune with a little twitch to it and different wording. LMAO but there are some out there who does create their own music and lyrics and I give them props! =D

I feel the same about my culture. I am not ashamed but I don't quite talk about my culture. I have a few Khmer friends, they dislike both Thai and Khmer movies/drama.

the reason why the actors are dubbed/don't use their own voice because no need to rememberize the script  they had people shout out the lines to them
lol i rmbr watching behind the scenes on the dvd. ppl were shouting the lines behind the camera to actors. i've seen recent khmer movies that don't do that anymore. now they're trying to memorize their lines. but still the movie quality isn't that great yet.

LOL ladyofdarkness.

yeah, chinese series aren't that good as they used to be. i love the ones from the 80s and 90s.

i don't hate khmer entertainment. i enjoy listening to traditional contempory khmer music. however, i don't like the movies nor the modern songs that they do covers of from other countries. the only one i like is rock production, which has originality in both lyrics and music composition. it's a great start for the future of cambodian music. i'm glad they've recognized talent over looks. but other music production still have pretty people w/ the lack of talent in the industry. it sucks.

khmer culture is so rich right now and i don't want them to lose that to modernization. i do hope that one day our entertainment will blossom into something so great that can be enjoyed internationally like the 60s and 70s. khmer films were so popular in thailand, china, singapore back then. i hope that we can achieve something that great again. cambodia just need better acting classes for actors/actresses and hardcore filming courses for future directors. there are plenty of great writers out there. they're just undiscovered. and the true talents are hiding somewhere. lol. they also need money to buy updated filming equipment. and learn to be patient instead of jumping from one movie to the next. a great movie does not come from that. it takes time and a lot of effort for a better achievement that we can all be proud of in the end.

someone here said that we need to stop using the war-excuse. i agree. look at korea. look at japan. look at germany. they're all war-torn countries. but they've worked so hard to get where they are today. maybe because cambodia's under the "dictatorship" of hun sen that cambodia's like this. *shrugs*
