Akshay Kumar's Airlift Opens Well

Akshay Kumar's Airlift had created immense curiosity ever since it's first trailer released. Today, as the movie hits the screens, one would be eager to know how is movie faring at the ticket window.

So here's some good news for all Akshay Kumar fans. The movie has opened to pretty good collections of around 30-35% with multiplexes opening well. According to a leading trade report, Airlift has opened better than Akshay's 2015 release Baby, that also hit the screens in the same week.

The Raja Krishna Menon movie has received a big opening in Delhi city, East Punjab with the business going to INR 1 crores by evening. The movie has had a decent opening in Mumbai.

Given that Airlift has released along side Kya Kool Hai Hum, it does have some competition from the film but that won't stop this movie to surpass Baby's opening day collections.

Impressive Start for Akshay Kumar's Airlift on Day 1

Akshay Kumar's Airlift has had an impressive start at the box office. After opening to a slow start, the movie earned INR 12.35 crores on its opening day.

Airlift grossed well in big cities however the mass centres had low collections.

While the collections of Airlift are lower than other Akshay Kumar's other films of 2015 - Singh Is Bliing and Gabbar Is Back, it is more than Kumar's first film of 2015 - Baby. The Neeraj Pandey movie had opened to INR 7.84 crores whereas Phantom which was of same genre as Airlift earned INR 8.39 crores.

The main business for the film has come in Mumbai, Delhi/UP and East Punjab and Mysore should show huge growth on Saturday and a growth of 20-25% will put the movie in a good position. Also the National Holiday on Tuesday should work wonders for the film.

Akshay Kumar is a master Khiladi: 10 reasons why Airlift will make a huge impact

The Thrill Factor Is Paramount: Though it is a political thriller based on a real-life historical incident, the predominant concern is to tell a gripping never-told story and that works like a charm.

The Akshay Factor: The transition from a tycoon steeped in self-interest to a caring concerned Indian, who masterminds the evacuation of thousands of stranded Indians in a foreign country, the film required an actor whose heroic stature was believable and yet huge. I believe the director Raja Krishna Menon thought of Irrfan Khan for the part. But when Akshay showed interest, the team rushed to sign him.

Salaamat Rahe Yeh Jodi: Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur look super-comfy with one another. They’re both Punjabi and vibed off-camera as siblings from the land of sarason da saag and makke ki roti. Also, Nimrat looks uncannily like Akshay’s real-life wife Twinkle Khanna.

The Cast Has A Blast: The supporting cast gives Akshay the kind of support that the cricket team players gave to Aamir Khan in Lagaan. The film bolsters the drama, gives the narrative an emotional map to follow. Every actor, big or small, is cast impeccably so that the drama draws us into folds willy-nilly.

The Cinematography Sucks Us In: Priya Seth, who helms the camera, provides an understated grandeur to the goings-on. The camera is both an accomplice and spectator in the drama that unfolds.

Jana ‘Gana’ Mana: The songs and music are wisely restricted to the background. K K’s patriotic song Tu bhula jisewhen the Indian flag is hoisted in the flag , prompts every Indian out of his or her seat.

Weak Competition: The film pitched against Airlift is Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 which can't even be compared to the former. Airlift has shown a jump of nearly 25-30 percent in major centres.
Sachi Hero? Unlike well-known real-life bio-pics of Chandrashekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh, Ranjit Katyal’s heroic act of rescuing 150,000 Indians is not recorded in any text book. The excitement of discovering an unsung hero infects the audience.
Akshay's Ranjit Katyal Is In All Of Us: Dig deep. You will find a Ranjit Katyal waiting to break free from the shackles of self-interest. The film’s main character is inspiring.
The Patriotic Card: Republic Day releases with a patriotic pitch tend to connect with the Indian within us.10 years ago Rakeysh Ompraksh Mehra’s Rang De Basanti was a Republic Day release. Last year Akshay Kumar’s Baby, which addressed the terror threat in India and in 2014 it was Salman Khan doing a patriotic Jai Ho on Republic Day.

Review by Anupama Chopra

Two things in Airlift will make your jaw drop. First, the story itself — in 1990, when Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, he made instant refugees of the approximately 1.7 lakh Indians who lived there. Overnight, homes, businesses and properties evaporated and once-wealthy expatriates were left struggling to survive in a war zone. A few good men took the lead, organised the Indian community and engineered an escape to Amman in Jordan, where the Indian government airlifted them in Air India planes. It was the largest civilian evacuation in history. But somehow it got buried and became a footnote instead of a headline. The second surprise is Akshay Kumar. This, I think, is his finest hour. There is little trace of the superstar swagger. Instead we get a man who is broken and vulnerable.
The character of Ranjit Katyal is a composite of two Indian businessmen in Kuwait who turned saviours when the war broke out. Ranjit is a hero who feels fear and desperation. Even in the action scenes, there is zero posturing. Big props to Akshay for putting his heart and might behind such an unconventional project, and to director Raja Krishna Menon for showcasing a story that had been lost on the sidelines.Kumud Mishra does nicely as a bureaucrat who becomes an unlikely hero. So does Prakash Belawadi, who plays a cantankerous, constantly complaining refugee.
But Airlift never takes full flight because of the screenplay. In fact, the film’s title is misleading because the actual airlift operation barely gets any screen time. Raja brings alive the horror of being a refugee but he doesn’t manage to create a sense of urgency and suspense. The other discordant note is Nimrat Kaur as Ranjit’s posh wife. She’s a terrific actor, but I found her a bit jarring. There’s a war going on but her hair and lipstick stay in place! Airlift is tonally inconsistent but the film is fuelled by a palpable sincerity. If nothing else, see it to see what Akshay Kumar can do. After all these years, he’s proven himself to be a real khiladi.

I watched this today .. thought it was good for a heroic movie. Akshay played his role well as a father, a husband, and a 'leader.' I really like the OST as well .. my favorite has to be Soch Na Sake

*Sigh* The world is getting scary .. not only do we have to many undiscovered diseases we have to continue to live in fear of each other's greed for power/control. Human sacrifices T______T Indescribable!

Anyway, I did no know they made this film based on true event ... what happened in the movie was scary -- look scary, especially women being taken advantage by the Iraqi/Saddam soldiers. Also, that Kuwaiti are sentenced to be killed like that of Hitler's order during the holocaust with the Jewish people.
